Mary Margaret Hyatt USTA SC President

Mary Margaret Hyatt, the newly minted President of USTA South Carolina, intends to create more opportunities for “mass participation in tennis” during her tenure.

“Our goal is to have 500,000 total players on South Carolina courts by 2035,” she states. That figure aligns with the national “35 by 35” initiative—to reach 35 million players nationwide by 2035.

To reach this goal, USTA South Carolina has identified key priorities, including outreach to schools, Parks & Recreation, coaches, and community tennis associations, along with a strong focus on facility improvements and advocacy.

“We need to coordinate all stakeholders to expand participation and ensure we have adequate facilities,” Hyatt says. She notes that South Carolina is leading the region, adding, “We are the top state in the Southern region for construction projects.”

An attorney and graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law, Hyatt also holds a B.S. in Health and Exercise Science and a Master of Public Health. After two decades representing insurance companies, she now works with the George Sink law firm in Myrtle Beach, representing injured clients.

“I am now helping people who need and appreciate my efforts, and I find that very rewarding,” she says.

Hyatt’s tennis journey began in Georgia, where she transitioned from competitive swimming to tennis. While she stepped away from the sport for a time, she rediscovered it as an adult.

“I only came to love tennis as an adult player, and I’m so glad I came back to it,” she says. “I appreciate the fun, competition, and friendships tennis brings.”

A 3.5 player and member of the Dunes Club, Hyatt enjoys playing with her family when schedules allow.

Since joining the USTA in 2012, Hyatt has served in nearly every leadership role, including Chair of the Finance Committee.
“It’s a pleasure to lead such a well-run nonprofit,” she says.

She emphasizes that success will require strong grassroots involvement across the state.
“Local players play a huge role—especially in advocacy. We’ve seen how powerful their voices can be.”

Hyatt encourages everyone to get involved:
“Please consider becoming a volunteer—we always need them, and we love our volunteers!”
